Cat update
Stapha woke me up yesterday at an ungodly hour of the morning by yowling his displeasure. The thing is, he had lost the ability to meow sometime around last May. He would aspirate, grunt, or meow silently. That's apparently over. No more silent kitteh! I think it's the steroids, but it could be this uberpowerful antibiotic. I'm grimly keeping him on it, even though it's messing with his digestion something fierce. He gets extra subcutaneous water for the final five days, but I want him to finish his full course. The vet is, of course, amazed and astounded. The missing meow has been a mystery for months. |

Food for thought: World AIDS Map
I thought I'd share this AIDS cartogram, which I found courtesy of the blog of the ever-thoughtful Andrew Sullivan at the Atlantic. No big pulpit-pounding message from me today, no wild gyrations or bitter jokes. I just thought it might make y'all pause, as it's made me pause: Current Mood: busyCurrent Music: Sluggo snoring on my desk |

Swans just after sundown
First it was pink, now it's blue. I didn't mess with the color either time. I *did* however, lug my tripod along this time. Makes a difference! |

I love Pema Chödrön
Without going into too many details in an open post, I'll say that some friends of mine and I have been going through some interesting times. Simultaneously, I've been reading some books by an American Buddhist nun, which have been the most amazing and insightful things I've come across for a long while. For us: "When we find ourselves in a mess, we don't have to feel guilty about it. Instead, we could reflect on the fact that we relate to this mess will be sowing the seeds of how we will relate to whatever happens next. We can make ourselves miserable, or we can make ourselves strong. The amount of effort is the same. Right now we are creating our state of mind for tomorrow, not to mention this afternoon, next week, next year, and all the years of our lives." Current Mood: calm |

Ice Cave at Big Four
My first time using Photostitch. The cave is so big that if a person were standing in the mouth, you'd barely be able to see him from this distance. This was not shot in black and white. It was a high contrast day. ETA: Actually, there are people standing in the cave mouth. And now, way past my bedtime. *dies* |

Three swans at sunset
Handheld telephoto at low light, so not so sharp. Still, pretty! I want to go back tomorrow with my tripod and try for more clarity. ( One more pic ) |

I was wondering...
If I wanted to go as far away from home as possible, where would that be? So, one way to look at that is to calculate your antipode. (Which, of course, I did by hand instead of bloody Googling it! Note: the default is set to Vancouver, BC. You can click on the map to change it.) The answer would be in the middle of the ocean, but the nearest land mass is this thing, seemingly known as "French and Southern Antarctic Lands." Catchy, but an awkward answer to "Where are you going for vacation?" I think going to Port Elizabeth, South Africa could also work. Or Madagascar. |
